The Montessori Middle School of Cape Cod is collaborating with Coonamessett Farm to create a comprehensive and meaningful learning environment. Do you recall the few days your science class ventured outside to start a unit by doing something related to the skill you were to be learning? For many, these days were the most meaningful and memorable of the year. For Montessori middle school students, this type of first-hand experience is the norm, not the exception.

By being able to go beyond the classroom and learn though experience, students gain a respect for the environment and a true sense of their place in the world. Practical science, math, language, and history are taught utilizing the resources of the farm and the community. For example, students may participate in a pond study unit at Coonamessett where they will learn about topics such as watershed area, the water cycle, polar molecules, emulsion, topography, pH levels, molecular bonds, and water quality. But a program of this depth and substance needs supporting materials.

Work on the land is an introduction both to nature and to civilization and gives a limitless field for scientific and historical studies.
